Low-voltage vs. line-voltage landscape lighting

Low-voltage (12-volt) landscape lighting is the standard for homes today: it's safe to touch, easy to adjust, energy-efficient, and doesn't require an electrician for the fixtures. Line-voltage (120-volt) is the household current used for a few high-output or commercial applications, but it needs conduit, deeper trenching, and a licensed electrician.

Why low-voltage wins for homes

A transformer steps your household 120 volts down to a safe 12 volts. That means the wire can be buried in a shallow trench, fixtures can be moved as your landscape grows, and there's virtually no shock risk — even around pools, docks, and kids.

Where line-voltage still shows up

Line-voltage is occasionally used for very tall commercial pole lighting or specific high-output needs. For residential landscapes — uplighting, path lights, dock lights, garden accents — low-voltage LED does everything beautifully and more safely.

Frequently asked

Is low-voltage lighting bright enough?

Yes. Modern low-voltage LEDs are extremely bright and efficient; brightness is chosen per fixture to match the job.

Do I need an electrician for low-voltage lighting?

The transformer plugs into a standard exterior outlet, so the lighting itself doesn't require an electrician. We handle the full install.
