Landscape Lighting Guide

Uplighting vs. downlighting: which does your yard need?

Uplighting places fixtures at ground level aiming up to dramatize trees, walls, and architecture. Downlighting mounts fixtures up high aiming down to gently wash lawns, patios, and paths — often called moonlighting when placed in trees. Most great designs use both: uplights for drama, downlights for soft, natural coverage.

Uplighting: drama and depth

Uplighting is the workhorse of facade and tree lighting. Aimed up a brick wall, a column, or a specimen oak, it creates the dramatic, magazine-cover look most people picture when they imagine landscape lighting.

Downlighting: soft and natural

Downlighting mimics the way the moon or a porch light falls — broad, gentle pools of light over walkways, seating areas, and garden beds. Placed high in a tree, it dapples the ground with shadow for a completely natural effect.

Using both together

A layered plan mixes the two: uplights to build focal points and depth, downlights to make spaces safe and usable. Balancing them is where design experience matters most.
