How to uplight trees the right way

To uplight a tree, place spotlights at or just below ground level near the base, angled up into the canopy. Small ornamental trees need one or two fixtures; large mature trees usually need three or more spaced around the trunk to light the canopy evenly and show off the branch structure.

Placement and aiming

Set fixtures back slightly from the trunk and aim up through the branches rather than straight at the bark. For multi-trunk or wide canopies, ring the tree with several lights so it reads as three-dimensional instead of a flat wall of light.

Matching output to the tree

A tall live oak needs more output and a tighter beam to reach the canopy than a crape myrtle. Choosing the wrong beam angle either washes out the tree or leaves the top dark — getting it right is where design experience pays off.

Frequently asked

How many lights does a large tree need?

Mature trees typically need three to five uplights spaced around the base to light the canopy evenly.

Will uplighting damage my tree?

No. Properly installed low-voltage fixtures and wiring won't harm the tree, and fixtures can be adjusted as it grows.
